San Francisco Signs

by Heidi Meredith · 9 comments

Lots of the bodegas around San Francisco have these really amazing typographic signs hanging out front.

I like the swirls and curls that many of them incorporate both in the shape and the ornamentation.

Many of these signs have neon lights. Too bad they don't light up anymore. I bet they'd look pretty awesome in the night/fog.

This Henry Schrumpf Flowers sign is on Valencia street in the Mission District. The shop is long gone, but the sign still hangs, almost hidden by a tree.

Got some pictures of great signage from your neighborhood? Send it over to info at printmag dot com with a little bit of context, and we'll start collecting them and showing a few every week.

Good picks! Here's a slightly improved shot of Henry Schrumpf Flowers.

And more San Francisco signs from FontShop when we did a short video featuring local sign painter Damon Styer.

Hey I wish I could send my wife, Margo (nickname 'Scrumps', short for scrumptious as in Truly Scrumptious) some Henry Schrumps flowers!

Hi Stephen! I've seen that New Bohemian video you guys made. It's so cool. I missed the event at Adobe Books but i hope there will be more opportunities! Thanks for posting the links. Have you done any sign exploring in other cities?

Old, USA is not Europe. The 50's has passed. Let the last mentioned style be in books and academic scripts. Show us what is new USA. I know you want to.

Please....?
