Speaking of Bernhard

by Steven Heller · 3 comments

He carries the Lucian Bernhard gene. Michael Schwab recently launched the Turner Classic Movies poster project (creative director: Rob Reed – 1 Trick Pony), which you can see on TMC “Summer Under the Stars” website.

The posters, which follow in the sachplakat tradition with a hint of the Beggarstaff Brothers and a tad of this, include silhouettes of movie stars like Julie Christie, Clint Eastwood, and Norma Shearer as they appeared in iconic films, such as (respectively) Darling, Hang ‘em High and Romeo and Juliet. As the images here exhibit, these are stunning works that combine past and present.

I LOVE THESE POSTERS! Since I'm an avid TCM fan, I saw the promo recently and had to visit the website. You didn't mention, however, that visitors can enter the sweepstakes for a chance to win these beautifully crafted posters.

Wonderful! But might have been nice to mention among all the influences the other Bay Area guy who reminded us of this great poster tradition LONG ago, the brilliant David lance Goines.
